History and development of Sohag university

      The first higher education center in Sohag governorate was the Faculty of Education, established in 1971. In 1975, Faculties of Arts and Science were established. This center started as a branch of Assiut University 1980 with the establishment of the Faculty of Commerce. In 1992, Faculty of Medicine was established. In 1995, Sohag Branch became a branch of South Valley University in Qena. In 1996, Faculty of Agriculture was established. Shortly after President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak's decree of establishing Sohag University in 2006, Faculties of Industrial Education and Nursing were added to the university. Finally, in2008, a presidential decree of establishing Faculties of Engineering and Veterinary Medicine was issued, raising  the number to ten faculties.

Sohag University

Presidential decree (No.129/ 2006) was issued on 19/4/2006 for establishing Sohag University. Hence, relevant regulations of Egyptian universities law were modified. Besides, a presidential decree of appointing Prof. Dr. Mostafa Mohamed Kamal as the first President of Sohag University was issued. On 11/6/2008, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Sayed Ibrahim has been appointed President of Sohag University according to presidential decree No. 181,2008.

Goals

      The total number of Sohag University students at present is approximately 30.000, in addition to students of open learning programs. The university has about 1300 staff members as well as 4500 administrative staff. The university is not confined to enormous quantitative developments but it extends to include qualitative ones represented in the following perspectives:

- Teaching with focus on the student as the pivot of the  learning process,

-  Achieving maximum quality levels in course-designing and textbooks,

-  Shifting into electronic publishing which keeps up with world technological and educational developments.

-  Paying attention to students' cultural, social, educational and sporting activities.

- Deepening the concept of credit hours system so as to apply it.

- Developing post-graduate studies programs in the different university faculties and in scientific research to keep up with higher education enhancement projects, contributes to developing the community, solving its problems, maintaining its environment, and reinforcing its effective elements.

 

All these goals go hand in hand with the university objectives to achieve qualitative development in the field of scientific research, its standards, and guidelines. It endeavors to achieve the best contribution and specialized academic achievements of its distinguished host of renowned scholars and researchers who are recognized at local, regional and world levels. It is also dedicated to serve society in cultural, economic, and health fields, etc. In this way, the university provides its surrounding society with specialized knowledge and consultation to contribute to the process of comprehensive development.

Current Plan

For achieving the above-mentioned objectives, the university administration priorities have been specified in the following steps:

- Implementing the first stage of infra-structure work in the new campus of Sohag University (750 acres) at Alkawamel area in cooperation with the Ministry of Housing,

- Setting up a complex for technical faculties in the new Campu, which includes Faculties of Engineering and Industrial Education, and a School for industrial education, as a center for developing industry financed by Higher Education Fund and European Union.

- Reinforcing mechanisms of quality assurance and academic accreditation,

- Developing the capabilities of staff members and academic and administrative staff.

- Paying attention to the teaching process and ensuring its regularity and   

  effectiveness.

- Developing academic programs and innovate new fields of specialization   to cope with local, regional, national and world changes and to achieve higher  rates of employing the  university graduates.

 

Vision of the university

Sohag University seeks to achieve distinct academic levels in higher education, and scientific research through upgrading  the performance and graduates of the university to the level of excellence and world competitive ability in close cooperation with other universities, institutions, and local, Arab and foreign authorities, accomplishing distinguished research and scientific studies as well as maximizing the university role in environment service and community development.

Mission of the university

- Providing students with modern teaching techniques, advanced methods of research, and developing their capability of creation, challenge, leadership and self-learning, so as to be able to compete at local, regional and world levels.

-           

- Developing and modernizing curricula in order to match world 

developments and subjecting them to periodical evaluation according to  international standards, taking into account the societal, ethical, social and cultural differences.

- Supporting university faculties with new and innovative academic

Programs and research centers capable of world competition. Completing the infra-structure of the faculties to serve the surrounding   environment and to upgrade its level of competition at the regional and international levels.

- Activating the university role to serve the surrounding society institutions and to provide them with new experienced generations who could help in boosting the performance of these institutions for world competition.

- Setting off the role of specialized centers and units to provide research services, consultation for society surrounding institutions and positively contribute in solving society problems and presenting visions regarding national issues.

- Effective participation in developing and upgrading the society cognitive aspects and conducting disciplined scientific research through planned employment, continuous development of abilities as well as preparing specialized experts for the different professions of society and preparing for  the future field of specialization.

- Paying attention to continuous learning, self-learning, and the  technology of distance-learning.

 

Objectives of the university

 

The university sets out to accomplish its mission through the following objectives:

- Preparing specialized experts in different fields much needed by the society and required in comprehensive             development fields, and providing well­ qualified graduates in the new and innovated specialties needed in labor        market.

- Providing quality education that contributes in preparing scientists and intellectuals who are the real treasure of any society.

 

- Spreading the culture of education development in university faculties and departments.

Presenting consultation and expertise to productive authorities and service sector for the sake of community services and developing the environment.

 

-Enhancing academic relations with other local and international  universities.

 

- Emphasizing noble human values and deepening national loyalty, and  maintaining the original principles of the society.                   

 

The university logo

 

- The university logo embodies the history and heritage of Sohag   province, and emphasizes the role of science as the way to progress and welfare.

-The emblem is armor since science is the armor of security, progress and   welfare. In its middle comes King Mina's head, with red-and-white crown as symbols of Upper and Lower Egypt. Inside the armor, there is an Islamic ecorated framework symbolizing Arab and Islamic civilization and includes the name of the university one logo in Arabic and another in English.  In this way, the logo combines the symbols of the ancient Egyptian civilization and Arab Islamic civilization.

   -  The logo also includes a book representing science and humanities, the

  atom symbolizing practical and applied faculties. The background of the logo is gold, the precious mineral, as a symbol of originality and purity.
